The seigneurial system is based on the feudal system when habitants (the workers) work for seigneurs (who were rich and wealthy) and was made for order and organization. In the caste system the king would be at the top of system then seigneurs and then at the bottom it would be the engages and habitants. Seigneurs are granted land thats about 5-10 kilometres by the king and have habitants work for them. Habitants pay every nov 11th and if not paid they lose the privilege of land usage. The land is divided into lots with a mill, church, wine press and a long narrow river. They brought settlers from France to farm their land. The habitants had to rent out a house to work for the seigneurs. There is a type of habitants called engages and they make a contract with seigneurs to come to New France and work as farmers for 3 years. So, in other words, they come as slaves instead of being tricked.
